Planning a get-together with family for Easter?
Think of food and wine matching as finding a partnership of equals. It's all about balance — the food and the wine shouldn't overpower each other.

    • Offer guests a choice of whites and reds.
      • Chardonnay or Riesling will complement baked ham, roast pork, chicken and turkey as deliciously as light, fruity red wines such as Gamay or Pinot Noir.
      • Heartier dishes need wines with more intensity, so try Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or an oaked Chardonnay if you're preparing roast beef.
    • Dry wines (sugar code 0-1) are very refreshing and make excellent aperitifs. They are superb with salty or oily foods and dishes with citrus flavours.
    • Semi-dry wines (sugar code 1-3) are particularly good with hot and spicy dishes if curries and Thai cuisine is on your menu.
    • After dinner, serve Icewine or late harvest wines with a dessert that is less sweet than the wine — think fruit-based desserts.
    • Don't forget to thank your host with a great Ontario wine.

Reif Estates Riesling VQA $10.20 (LCBO 111799)
This crisp, refreshing wine with pear and citrus notes adapts beautifully to picnic lunches or elegant dinner parties… Fresh acidity makes it especially food friendly with a variety of dishes ranging from mixed salad greens to dinner entrees of grilled seafood and chicken.

Henry of Pelham Cabernet Franc VQA $13.95 (LCBO 27839)
Cabernet Franc is one of Henry of Pelham's most fruit-driven wines. It is highly aromatic, with ripe raspberry and tobacco on the nose. Medium weight and juicy with a long, dry finish.
